One New Brunswick MP says more changes to Health Canada’s medical cannabis regulations (ACMPR) are expected in the coming weeks.

During debate today in the House of Commons, Pat Finnigan, Liberal MP for Miramichi—Grand Lake (New Brunswick), made several comments in reference to cannabis legalization and licensing, saying there are expected rule changes coming.

“Over the coming weeks,” said Finnigan, “Health Canada will introduce changes to its program overseeing the medical cannabis industry to accelerate the licensing of the medical cannabis producers, enabling the industry to meet an increased demand for cannabis. This is a great economic generator.”

“Existing rules surrounding product safety, good production practices and rigorous restrictions on which pesticides to use will remain in place,” continued Finnigan. “Health Canada will continue to inspect producers and enforce the regime.”

These statements come after “improvements” were announced last Friday to the ACMPR, which saw changes in how production licenses are issued and how those with a license can operate.

The changes are being seen as a harbinger of more to come by some industry experts, as the government begins to ramp up production capacity in preparation for legalization next year.

There are currently 45 cultivation licenses issued and 29 sales licenses. As of May 25, 1,665 applications have been received to produce medical cannabis for commercial purposes, 265 have been refused, 428 are in progress, 69 have been withdrawn and 858 were incomplete and have been returned.

Based on these changes, which take effect immediately, we should expect to see 40+ new licenses to produce issued almost right away #ACMPR

Yup. Now seeing “confirmation of readiness for a licence” [i.e. before inspection] emails from HC – exciting times! #ACMPR
